We get it – you love small dogs. Maybe you follow our Facebook page and feel your heart squeeze every time a new face pops up. Maybe you’ve daydreamed about bringing one home. But right now, the timing just isn’t right. Your landlord said no. You’re traveling too much. You already have a full house.
Here’s the good news: you don’t have to adopt a dog to change a dog’s life. As a small, all-volunteer, foster home-based rescue, Small Dog Rescue of Minnesota runs entirely on the generosity of people like you. Every single thing on this list makes a real, measurable difference for the dogs in our care.
1. Open Your Home as a Foster
Fostering is the single most impactful thing you can do for our rescue. Every dog in our program lives in a volunteer’s home – there is no facility, no kennel, no building with rows of crates. When we run out of foster homes, we literally cannot take in another dog. That means a dog in need stays in a bad situation longer, or doesn’t get rescued at all.
Fostering can be short-term (a few days while we arrange transport) or longer-term (weeks or months while we find the right forever home). We cover all veterinary expenses and supplies. You provide the love, the couch space, and maybe a lap. It’s temporary for you, but it’s everything for them.
2. Make a Financial Donation
Rescue is expensive. Between veterinary exams, spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, dental work, and occasional emergency procedures, the costs add up fast – especially for dogs who come to us with medical needs that have been neglected for years. A donation of any size goes directly to the care of our dogs. You can donate here or mail a check to our P.O. Box in Rochester. Every dollar matters, and we mean that without a shred of exaggeration.
3. Share Our Posts on Social Media
This one costs you absolutely nothing and takes about three seconds. When you share a dog’s profile from our Facebook page, you put that dog in front of people we could never reach on our own. We’ve had dogs get adopted because a friend of a friend of a friend saw a shared post and fell in love. The ripple effect of a single share is real. So the next time you see a little face on your feed, hit that share button. You might be the reason that dog finds a home.
4. Donate Supplies
Our foster families go through a lot of supplies: crates, leashes, harnesses, dog beds, blankets, food, treats, and cleaning products. If you’re cleaning out a closet or see a sale at the pet store, think of us. Gently used items are welcome, too. Reach out through our contact page and we’ll connect you with a foster who can put your donation to immediate use.
5. Volunteer Your Time or Your Car
Dogs need rides – to vet appointments, to meet potential adopters, and sometimes across long distances to reach their foster home. If you have a car and a free afternoon now and then, transport volunteering is a huge help. Beyond driving, we also need help with administrative tasks, event coordination, and fundraising. Even a few hours a month can take real weight off our volunteers’ shoulders.
6. Check for an Employer Matching Program
Many companies match charitable donations made by their employees, which means your contribution could instantly double. If your employer has a matching gift program, a $50 donation becomes $100 for the dogs in our care. It’s one of the most overlooked ways to amplify your impact. Check with your HR department – you might be surprised.
7. Simply Talk About Us
Word of mouth is still one of the most powerful tools a small rescue has. Mention us to a coworker who’s thinking about getting a dog. Bring us up at a family dinner. Tell your neighbor about the work we do. You don’t need a script – just tell people that there’s a rescue in Minnesota dedicated to finding loving homes for small dogs, and that we’re always looking for adopters, fosters, and supporters. That’s it. That’s the whole pitch.
Every Little Bit Adds Up
Small Dog Rescue of Minnesota exists because everyday people decided to show up for dogs who had nowhere else to go. You don’t need to adopt to be part of that story. Whether you foster for a weekend, share a post over your morning coffee, or drop a bag of dog food on a foster’s porch, you’re making rescue possible.
And who knows – maybe one day the timing will be right, and you’ll be the one filling out that adoption application. Until then, we’re grateful to have you in our corner.
