Juniper
Breed:
Lhasa Apso
Age: AdultSex: Female
Size: Small Description: Juniper is a 2 1/2 year old Lhasa Apso. She came from a puppy mill and then lived for 4 months in a kennel before she came to Small Dog Rescue. When she first came to live with us she was terrified of everything, especially humans. Everything that Juniper was exposed to was new to her. For the first few weeks in our home, Juniper relied on our two resident dogs to learn about her new world. She trusted the dogs much more than the humans in the house. We have two small dogs of our own, and they were by far the biggest help in teaching Juniper what it meant to be a dog living in a home.
Juniper would not let us touch her or come near her for about the first week she lived with us. We have continued to make fabulous progress with Juniper and are amazed at how much she has improved in the two months she has lived with us!
Juniper has definitely bonded most with her foster mom. She follows me everywhere in the house and will allow me to pet her and pick her up. Juniper does NOT like being off the ground. She tolerates being picked up when it is necessary, but is NOT a snugly lap dog at this point, and may never be. She enjoys curling up at our feet, or laying in her dog bed.
Juniper gets very excited when I come home, and will join right in with the other dogs in pushing her way in for some love and attention. She rarely barks and does not have any aggressive behavior towards humans or other dogs.
Juniper was not potty-trained when we got her and we are very thankful we had our dogs to help show her how to go in and out of the doors to go potty. She has done very well with her potty training - we have been very consistent with giving her plenty of opportunities to go outside, as well as keeping her diet and schedule consistent. She will need someone to continue this process with her so that she can continue to be successful.
The perfect home for Juniper would be to live with an experienced dog owner who understands the patience and hard work that is necessary to continue her rehabilitation. A fenced yard would be a HUGE plus. Juniper needs to live in a home with another gentle smallish dog so that she can immediately feel safe and confident while getting to know her new family. Having another dog to help teach Juniper about another new environment will make her new family's job SO much easier and Juniper SO much happier!
It will take Juniper at least a couple of weeks to get to know and trust the new humans in her life. We have worked hard with Juniper and have seen her come so far in her journey. She is extremely sweet, loyal, and actually quite silly. She loves her toys and will roll around on her back playing with them. She just recently learned how to chase a ball. We have conquered leash walking now and Juniper loves to go around the block exploring the world. She has even tried to initiate play with the neighbors Shi-tzu's. It is so rewarding to see her actually enjoying life and having fun after all that she has been through.
Juniper is a work in progress and we are so proud of her for being such a brave little dog and accomplishing so much in such a short period of time. I can only imagine what a fabulous dog she will continue to develop into! Please consider giving Juniper the love that she so deserves!!
She will be spayed, up to date on shots, heart worm tested, have a fecal, be treated for fleas and ticks, and micro-chipped prior to her adoption. Her adoption fee is $325.
